This trade can be seen as a "remedial measure" for the 76ers after signing Caleb Martin to a four-year, $40 million deal last July. At that time, considering the limited salary cap space following their acquisition of Paul George, this seemed like a smart move. I rated it an “A” in free agent signings due to its creativity (including an unlikely-to-trigger incentive clause worth $5 million that wouldn’t count against the salary cap). However, seven months later, my confidence in this signing has diminished.
Kai Leeb Martin is certainly not the reason behind Philadelphia's sub-.500 record this season but he also hasn’t emerged as key to solving those issues. Despite shooting 38% from three-point range—above his career average of 36%—his overall scoring efficiency is below average with just a 47% shooting rate inside two-pointers—the lowest since his rookie season (36%). Defensively, Martin has failed to become a game-changer; despite taking on relatively tough defensive assignments (with opponents using him at rates above anyone else on team), he hasn't significantly impacted team's defensive performance.
The recent four-game winning streak occurred while Martin was sidelined by a hip injury and new two-way contract player Justin Edwards excelled in his starting role.
